We have quite a number of enquiries about weddings at St. Paul's, but we can, in law, only marry those who live in this parish,
or are on the church electoral roll.
If you would like to be married at St. Paul's we hope the following information will be helpful.
Can we be married at St. Paul's?
Both of you must be over 18 at the time of the marriage, (or over 16 if you have written consent from your parents).
At least one of you must live in St. Paul's parish
(see our Parish page for details)
or be on the church electoral roll. To be on the electoral roll you must have 'habitually attended public worship in the parish during
a period of 6 months prior to enrolment'.
You do not need to have been baptised.
If one or both of you are divorced and have a surviving former spouse, marriage in church is at the discretion of the incumbent (the vicar).
If you are both British citizens then the legal preliminary for marriage would usually be the calling of banns.
On three Sundays prior to your marriage your names are read out during the main Sunday service.
Those present are asked to notify the clergy if they know of any legal reason why you may not marry.
Provided there is no legal objection after the banns have been announced three times the marriage may take place within three months.
If one of you lives in another parish or is on the electoral roll of another church banns must be read there also and a banns certificate
obtained to show that this has been done.
If one or both of you are citizens of any other country then the legal preliminary for your marriage would be a Common Licence.
The criteria are the same as for marriage by banns, but, in addition, at least one of you must be baptised and, if you are not a British citizen,
you must have a current, valid passport.
If you are subject to immigration control while in the UK you must be aware that marriage in an Anglican Church in England or Wales will not alter
your immigration status.
If you wish to apply to be married at St. Paul's please make an appointment to meet with the vicar, Merrin Playle (Tel. 020 8552 9955)
